Gilcrux is a small traditional village, which lies on the outskirts of the Lake District National Park. Gilcrux is a small village and civil parish in the Ceremonial County of Cumbria.  Formerly part of Cockermouth Rural District Gilcrux is now part of the Borough of Allerdale. The village is located on the South Bank of the River Ellen around 5 miles North of Cockermouth and around 23 miles South West of Carlisle the County town of Cumbria. The name Gilcrux comes from Welsh meaning ‘Hill Retreat’. An early record of the village is shown on a map of the Cumbria area by Christopher Saxon in 1567, in which the village is known as Gilcrosse.

Gilcrux is remarkable for the number of its springs.  There are 5 main Springs in the village which never fail in the summer. The village also has a vibrant village hall and children’s play park and village green.
